Bassano in Teverina
is a quaint small village located in the Etruscan area of
Upper Lazio, in the Viterbo province, on the Umbrian and
Tuscan borders. It faces the green “Tiber Valley”, an area
filled with important monuments and landscapes: Civita di
Bagnoregio, the “Sacred Woods” of Bomarzo, the Dome and Borgia
Fort at Civita Castellana, Orsini Castle at Vasanello, and the
Dome of Orvieto, only to name a few. |

The landscape of the valley is characterized by the Tiber, the
sacred river of Rome, that slowly flows at the foot of the
villages situated along the way. On these hills primitive
castles were built, transformed along the centuries into
unique hill towns, with their austere medieval appearance and
fragile clay foundations. From the belvederes of these
villages you can admire breathtaking and unexpected panoramas.
The historical characteristic of Bassano in Teverina lies in
its medieval Antico Borgo. During World War II the entire
borgo was destroyed by bombing. It has been recently restored
thanks to an excellent urbanistic project that turned Bassano
in Teverina into an elegant residential village.
A place of interest is the
medieval tower, inside of which, just 30 years ago, a campanile,
an authentic jewel of Romanesque architecture, was discovered! At
the base of the tower is the ancient gate of the village where one
can see the portals, consumed by the passage of the drawbridge
chains (Borgomusica's site). Bassano people are also very proud of the ancient church
of Santa Maria dei Lumi, built in the first half of the 11th
century next to the fortified village. |
